B-ROADS: A Horrible Comedy
It's been a long time coming but B Roads is finally here... Well, almost.
For our second feature we pay tribute to the films that scared us s**tless in our youth and made us laugh like drains, and apply our own spin.
Stan is a London cabbie stuck on the rank at a Yorkshire airport. Jodie is an up-and-coming American actress on hiatus from her hectic lifestyle. Together, they are stuck in the backwoods of nowhere when Stan's cab breaks down in hostile farmer country. The mismatched pair are forced to pull together in order to stay alive... And escape the murderous clutches of the Creamy Dream Dairy.

Dave: I have just read the final draft of the script, that Rob has just finished and its awesome. That’s the only word I can use to describe the script. Unlike with Man_in_a_hat, this script is tight and loaded with action, comedy and very gory. He has taken my idea and turned it into a travellers worse nightmare. So with the script done, I’m just waiting for Rob to format it and I shall then begin the long task of break downs and shot lists etc. But the good thing about this film is that I have been living with the idea for about 5 years now, so I can pretty much see the whole film in my head.
We have talked about filming the opening 3 pages as a trailer to send to possible investors, and I think we are planning on doing this at the end of November. As of yet we have had alot of interest from possible investors, but as with 'Man_in_a_hat', we have found alot of people who are to be kind all talk. So worse case is that Rob and I become bankrupt from funding this film ourselves, but one way or another I AM MAKING THIS FILM. We are hoping that Monday will be entered into some festivals and may catch the attention of the right person. Monday is been sent out along with a new man_in_a_hat short film, both of which by the way are getting great reviews, and i thank the people who have emailed me reguarding monday...Thanks.
So on that note I shall thanks for reading my first B-Roads blog and keep checking back as I shall update as and when things happen with B-Roads.

Dave: Well after a long time in the planning, we start filming the opening to B-Roads on Saturday January 10th 2009. We have the usual crew Andrew Forbes (Camera), Rob Hudson (Writer, Producer) Myself (Director, Cinematographer, Editor and Camera). Joining us this time will be actor Waleed Khalid who I have worked with on a number of short films.
The main idea behind us doing this opening is basically for us to have a trailer to show possible investors and to also let people know that we are serious about what we are doing. Things are starting to pick up for the film now, after 2 years of writing and numerous drafts of the script we finally have a Final draft, which I am currently breaking down. We have got some funding for the film, but we are still looking for more. Once the opening is filmed and completed I shall be putting it online for all to see, we hope to start full principal photography in the summer.
As well as doing the opening, I’ve been busy developing visual FX for the film (for which there is alot) and playing with shooting day for night. Since 90% of the film is set at night and we don’t have a massive budget I’m looking to film during the day and use several methods to create the look of night. I did it for certain scenes in man_in_a_hat, but this time its almost an entire 90 minute film so I need to get it right. As well as testing visual effects, I’ve also been playing with HD, I recently shot a short showreel piece for Waleed called ‘The Job’ which was filmed with one HD camera. I’m not a massive fan of HD (Blu-ray aside), I feel you the viewer are so taken back by how the footage looks, that you don’t really watch the film in my eyes HD is more for documentaries and wildlife programs. But this said you have more room to play using HD then you do using standard definition. So this is going to be a big decision to make do I film SD or HD.
So keep watching this space, as after next weekend I shall be uploading photos of the shoot and then the opening/trailer will follow on from that.
And if anyone out there is interested in getting involved whether it be financial, crew, acting or if you are just generally interested in this production then please email me.

Dave: Well after 2 years in the planning we finally filmed the opening to B-Roads on Saturday, and all in all it was an excellent shoot. As I have previously stated this opening is going to act as a trailer for the time been to hopefully help us secure more funding for the rest of the feature.
From my point of view over the past 3 months I’ve been working with actor Waleed Khalid on a number of test short films that he had written. These films were a way for me to test some of the shots that I had planned for this opening and a way for me to see how they look on screen. One short film I completed with Waleed recently was called ‘The Job’, this was filmed in one day with the only crew been myself. One of the shots in this short plays a big part in this opening so it was great to actually test this shot in something more then just a random series of clips. As for Waleed I have never worked with an actor with so much dedication to the role as him. Even though it’s a very small role, it was a very demanding and physical one and one he got right into.
It felt great to be back out in the freezing cold filming again, and the 6 members of cast and crew were all in high spirits. Along with Rob, Andrew, Rob’s mum and Myself on the crew side we where joined by Jemma Mosley who did Waleed’s make up, and once we come to start filming will be doing the make up on the film.
I’ll be now editing the footage into 2 different cuts, the first is the actual opening to the film and the second will be the trailer. The first cut will be kept under wraps until the film is finished but the trailer will be on this site as soon as it’s completed, so keep an eye out for it. But for now I’ll put up some production stills for you all to see.
Can’t wait now until we start filming the main body of the film, this is already starting out to be a more enjoyable experience then man_in_a_hat and I hope that continues.
So keep watching this space.

Dave: Well the opening scene is now edited and I have to say WOW it has turned out to be something that I couldn’t have predicted. I have shown it to a number of people for feedback and the response is something I could have only dreamed of. Everyone of the reviewers has loved it and all have commented on a certain shot within the scene.
For this scene I tried a number of different and new well to me) techniques. Researched the look of ’Saving Private Ryan’ & ’28 Days Later’ for this scene and the end result is stunning. So what now? Now we are taking this opening along with the script and our ideas to parental financers in the hope of getting funding for the rest of the film. If all goes well then the full production will hopefully kick in early summer. I’m planning for a 30 day shoot, which will consist of long days, but that’s the best thing about film making. I personally can’t wait to get back out filming again, and almost 3 years have past since ’man_in_a_hat’ it’s time to put everything I’ve learned over the past 3 years into motion.
In the mean time I’m breaking down the script and planning each scene as well as trying new visual effects . So when I find out more news I shall let you all know. And if anyone is interested in helping out in any way please email me or give me a call.

Dave: Well the teaser trailer has been up on the net for a while now and it’s getting some amazing response. But sadly we are still struggling to find more funding for the film. In the meantime Dave has been testing new effects as well as how to make a green screen car scene look more interesting. At the rate it’s going we will end up financing the film ourselves.
Whilst Dave has been busy planning Rob has been busy writing a new feature script, one that we can do with very little money whilst we continue to find funding for B-Roads. The new script is going to be something very different to what we’ve done in the past, the main fact is that its a romantic comedy. The style of the film is going to be very indie (think Slacker, Here we Go or even Before Sunrise/Sunset. I think that we both felt that we needed to do something very light and so ‘A Film About Nothing’ has come about. We are hoping to gear up with it soon, and we are very much hoping that this film along with ‘Man_in_a_hat’ we will be able to find the funding we need to help us make the very strange and demented world of B-roads come to live.
